In the UK, schools are generally not required to charge for the time it takes to comply with Freedom of Information (FOI) requests unless the cost of fulfilling the request exceeds £450, which is considered the "appropriate limit" for most public authorities, including schools. If a request requires significant time and effort to retrieve the information, costs will be charged calculated at a flat rate of £25 per hour of work.
Where a fee is to be charged, we will issue a fees notice before charging, and the clock stops until the requester pays.
Specific activities which count toward the cost limit:
-
Determining if the information is held
-
Locating and retrieving it
-
Extracting it from documents
Time spent on redaction, legal review, or formatting doesn’t count toward the limit
